LEED Platinum lighting for the Unites State's leading sustainability advocates

The US Green Building Council's 75,000 square foot Headquarters located in the Foggy Bottom district of Northwest Washington, D.C. exemplifies a LEED Platinum Certified office project.

Clanton & Associates designed an integrated, dynamic, architectural lighting, dimming, occupancy, daylight harvesting, and glare control system which provides an appropriate amount of light with a minimum electric load based on daylight availability and occupant requirements. The ambient illumination is bright and cheerful, aided by wall washing to increase perceived brightness and provide way-finding supplemented by location specific task lighting. Superior daylight penetration is achieved by relocating perimeter work space and using a reflective carpet on the de-facto floor level light shelf.

The Headquarters demonstrate how energy efficiency can be brought to a well illuminated project offering exceptional visual comfort and received a LEED-CI, Version 3 Platinum rating from the US Green Building Council. The lighting and controls were responsible for securing 10 of the 93 awarded points, including an innovation point for lighting power density reduction for a connected load of less than a half a watt per square foot. Additional energy savings are realized with occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting controls.

 Key Features:

· Daylight, indirect/direct ambient lighting and task lighting provide great quality light

· Lighting Power Density = 0.5 W/sqft

· Automated lighting controls dim in response to daylight, reducing energy by over 75% below ASHRAE 90.1 2004
