Improving Site Lighting for Environmental Compliance.
Clanton & Associates partnered with Aggregate Industries to evaluate and improve site lighting at the Main Plant to address concerns about excessive light spill, glare, and compliance with the site’s Planned Unit Development (PUD) requirements. The project focused on re-aiming and shielding luminaires to minimize light trespass onto the adjacent mountainside and reduce sky glow, thereby enhancing the facility's environmental responsibility and community impact.
By implementing targeted adjustments, including re-aiming luminaires downward and adding shielding, the team achieved a significant 75% reduction in light spill onto the mountainside. This brought the site closer to compliance with the PUD lighting standards. Further, Clanton & Associates introduced recommendations for replacing older, high-output lights with modern LED luminaires featuring lower lumen outputs and zero uplight, reducing glare while maintaining adequate illumination for work areas.
Continued support and monitoring ensure that Aggregate Industries can meet its long-term goals for environmental stewardship and operational effectiveness while adhering to best practices in outdoor lighting design. The project stands as a model for balancing industrial lighting needs with ecological and community considerations.
